Segments and what to expect

Highway 1 is not one road in winter but four, and the names below are the ones drivers and Manitoba 511 use for them. The elevations are the province's own, from its cameras at the places named.

1. Saskatchewan line to Brandon to 409 m

   Through Virden and the Assiniboine valley to Brandon (409 m): rolling, a little sheltered by the valley, and the coldest city on the road — January averages −16.6 °C at Brandon Airport.

2. Brandon to Portage la Prairie 409 m → 259 m

   Down off the escarpment through Carberry and Sidney onto the Red River plain: the wind arrives here, and the drifting with it — Highway 1 was closed from Winnipeg to Sidney on 18 January 2026.

3. Portage la Prairie to Winnipeg 259 m → 239 m

   The flattest 80 km in the country, through Elie and Headingley to the Perimeter: the stretch the province and the RCMP close for whiteouts, as on 27 February 2026, when the whole Perimeter went with it.

4. Winnipeg to Falcon Lake and the Ontario line from 239 m

   East across the plain to Richer, then into the Whiteshell forest on the Shield: more snow, more shelter, fewer closures, and the Ontario line at the end of it.

• 27 February 2026

  On 27 February 2026 gusts of 60 to 80 km/h turned the snow on the fields into a whiteout: the entire Perimeter Highway around Winnipeg and the Trans-Canada from the city to Elie were shut, with Highways 9, 8, 26, 2, 3 and 236, and reopened through the evening. • 18 January 2026

  Highway 1 was closed from Winnipeg to Sidney, 150 km west, for blowing snow on the morning of 18 January 2026 under an Environment Canada blowing snow advisory, and reopened at about 5:15 p.m. Source: Global News Winnipeg, 18 January 2026.

Alternate routes when Highway 1 is closed

• If Highway 1 between Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie is closed: Highway 2 through Elm Creek, then Highway 13 north — about 25 min longer than the direct road when both are open, 124 km against 95 km. The southern loop across the same plain. When the Trans-Canada is closed for visibility, Highway 2 is usually on Manitoba 511's list too.

How long does Winnipeg to Brandon take on Highway 1?

About 215 km and 2 h 45 min on a clear road as openrouteservice measures it, centre to centre. The 80 km to Portage la Prairie are the exposed part, closed for whiteouts on 18 January and 27 February 2026.

Do I need winter tires on the Trans-Canada in Manitoba?

Not by law. Manitoba has no winter tire requirement; Manitoba Public Insurance finances them instead, up to $2,000 a vehicle at prime plus 2%. Studded tires are legal only from 1 October to 30 April.

Why does Highway 1 close between Portage and Winnipeg when it is not snowing?
