Iowa DOT reports winter road conditions from October 15 to April 15 on the interstates, U.S. and state highways that Iowa DOT maintains, not county roads or city streets. Crews update a report every two hours or as conditions change, and the feed this page reads refreshes every 10 minutes. Conditions are entered by maintenance staff and describe what is on the pavement, not the forecast. This page shows those reports next to our own road-surface forecast. Always check with Iowa 511 before setting off.

- The roadway is dry or wet and generally clear. Isolated frozen precipitation may exist, including icy bridge decks.
- Partially Covered
- Frost, ice, sleet or slush, snow or a mixture is causing the roadway to be partially covered. Markings may be hard to see at times, the surface may become slick, snow-packed and rutted, and moderate blowing and drifting snow with occasional drifts may be encountered.
- Partially Covered with Ice
- Ice covers a significant portion of the roadway. Some pavement remains ice-free, but traction may be greatly reduced; slow down and be prepared for sudden slippery spots.
- Completely Covered
- The roadway is completely covered with precipitation, to the point that markings are most likely obscured and it is hard to tell the roadway from its surroundings. Travel could be difficult or hazardous.
- Completely Covered with Ice
- Ice covers the entire roadway. Extremely slippery conditions with significantly reduced traction; travel at reduced speeds and consider delaying the trip.
- Travel Not Advised
- The roadway has deteriorated to the point that travel is very dangerous. Emergency vehicles and snowplows may be called off the road, and it may be impossible to get emergency vehicles to a scene.
- Impassable or Closed
- Impassable means blocked by snow or disabled vehicles. Closed means travel is restricted by barricades, gates, official vehicles or other physical means; Iowa law prohibits entering a closed roadway or moving traffic control devices.
