Wyoming Chain Law & Wind Closures

Wyoming has a chain law like its neighbors, and then it has the wind. WYDOT closes highways to light, high-profile vehicles when gusts get up — an RV, a camper, a moving van, an empty box trailer — and ignoring that closure is a misdemeanor, not a ticket.

The two chain law levels

Both levels are satisfied by tire chains. What else counts depends on the level, and Wyoming asks for the drivetrain and the tires together at Level 2 where Level 1 takes either on its own.

Level 1

Tire chains, or adequate snow tires, or an all-wheel drive vehicle. Any one of the three.

Level 2

Tire chains, or an all-wheel drive vehicle on adequate mud and snow or all-weather rated tires — the drivetrain alone is no longer enough. Commercial vehicles need chains on at least two drive wheels, at opposite ends of the same drive axle.

Fines

Non-compliance is a $250 fine, or $750 where the violation closes the highway.

Wind closures and light, high-profile vehicles

WYDOT closes highways to light, high-profile vehicles — RVs, campers, moving vans, utility trailers and other tall boxy loads — when the wind threatens to blow them over, and the signs now name a weight threshold rather than a list of vehicle types, because WYDOT says it is still working on the definition. Where gusts reach 60 mph and there is no sign available to post a closure, WYDOT publishes the road as an extreme blow over risk instead. Driving past a closure is a misdemeanor: a $1,000 fine and up to 30 days, rising to $2,500 for another offense within three years — four times what the chain law costs, and the reason this is the rule to check in Wyoming.
