Rogers Pass Winter Tire & Chain-Up Requirements

Rogers Pass is on a designated winter tire and chain route. Winter tires are required on it every year from October 1 to April 30, whatever the forecast on the day, and commercial vehicles carry chains and put them on at the chain-up signs. What is in force right now — a chain-up in effect, a closure — this page does not carry; DriveBC ↗ is the authority before you set off. The rule in full, with the fines and the exceptions, is on the British Columbia page.

What this page can tell you is the surface at the summit, from radar and surface analysis: currently dry, with the road surface estimated at 2°C. The road surface figure is an estimate derived from air temperature, not a measurement — bridges and overpasses run colder than the number shown.

Rogers Pass Weather Forecast: Next 6 Days

At the summit, 1,330 m. Each day shows its warmest and coldest hour, and the worst driving conditions forecast anywhere in it — not the average, because the hour that closes a pass is the one worth knowing about.

The climb to Rogers Pass

Where each approach starts, how far below the summit, and how much road the climb takes. The starting points are DriveBC cameras, so the elevations are the province's own; the distances are measured along the highway's line. Snow at the summit and rain at the start is the normal state of this road for half the year, and the table says how far apart the two are.

Approach Starts at Elevation Climb to the summit Over
From Revelstoke, eastbound Revelstoke 450 m +880 m 68.9 km
From Golden, westbound Golden 803 m +527 m 78.5 km

Why Rogers Pass closes

Avalanches, on purpose. The 40 km of Highway 1 through Glacier National Park crosses 135 avalanche paths under slopes that get up to 15 m of snow a winter, and Parks Canada runs the largest mobile avalanche control programme in the world to keep it open: soldiers fire 105 mm howitzers at the starting zones to bring the snow down while the road is empty, and seven concrete snowsheds carry the highway under the paths that run most often. A control closure lasts two to eight hours; a storm cycle can keep the pass shut for days, as it did from 17 to 20 March 2026.

The army's part in this, Operation PALACI, has run since 1961 and ends in August 2027; Parks Canada says the programme continues and is talking to National Defence about what replaces the guns.

Two dates for the tire rule here. Parks Canada's winter-driving page for the park says winter tires are required from October 1 to March 31; the province's rule for routes through mountain passes runs to April 30. Where two authorities differ, drive to the later one.

The dated closures, with the province's own releases for each, are on the Highway 1 page.

If Rogers Pass is closed

  • Highways 23, 6, 3 and 95 through the Kootenays — about 9 h 25 min longer than the direct road when both are open, 735 km against 148 km for Rogers Pass. There is no short way round Rogers Pass. This one runs south past Nakusp (with the Galena Bay ferry), through Nelson and Creston to Cranbrook and back north up the Columbia — most of a day, and the reason a Rogers Pass closure is usually waited out.

Distances and times are measured over openrouteservice on a clear road, and a closure day is not one: the detour carries the closed road's traffic too. Whether the pass is open right now is on DriveBC ↗.
