Allison Pass Winter Tire & Chain-Up Requirements

Allison Pass is on a designated winter tire and chain route. Winter tires are required on it every year from October 1 to April 30, whatever the forecast on the day, and commercial vehicles carry chains and put them on at the chain-up signs. Why Allison Pass closes

Weather from the coast, on the first range it meets. Allison Pass is the high point of the Hope-Princeton inside Manning Park, and the Pacific storms that reach Hope as rain arrive here as snow, with avalanche paths above the road on the Hope side and slides and washouts below it: the storms of December 2025 washed away 50 m of the highway 42 km east of Hope. It is also the province's fallback — when the Coquihalla and the Fraser Canyon were gone in November 2021, this was for three weeks the only road from the coast to the Interior, open to essential travel only.

• Highway 5 to Merritt, then 5A to Princeton — about 1 h longer than the direct road when both are open, 215 km against 133 km for Allison Pass, Hope to Princeton. Up the Coquihalla and back down the Nicola Valley on 5A. Longer than it looks on the map, and the Coquihalla is often shut by the same storm.
