Thruway Winter Travel Advisory

The Thruway Authority's Winter Travel Advisory reports no conditions on any of its 21 sections right now (as published at Nov 8, 2026 7:40 AM EST). That is not an all-clear: the Authority fills the advisory in during winter weather, and "No Report" is what every section reads the rest of the time. The map above is this page's own reading of the pavement in the meantime.

The road status runs from "Generally Clear and Dry" through "Wet", "Snow and Ice" (wheel paths may be visible) and "Severe Snow and Ice" (the pavement is not visible) to "Closed Portions" — the Authority explains each ↗.

The strongest sustained wind forecast on the road in the next 48 hours is 35 mph between Dunkirk and Ripley, around Sun 3 PM. 2 segments are forecast to reach 30 mph sustained or more — the hours are in the table. Crosswind is the part of the wind blowing across the road, and it is the part that pushes a trailer, a camper or an empty box truck sideways.

The forecast also flags gusts hazardous for high-profile vehicles: Dunkirk–Ripley, Sun 3 PM (gusts near 40 mph). These are the worst points on the road hour by hour, not every place it will be gusty.

What the Thruway Authority restricts, and when

The Thruway Authority decides restrictions on the Thruway, storm by storm. It publishes no wind speed at which it restricts vehicles, and no standing list of the cars, trailers or RVs a storm ban covers — each ban is announced when it is imposed.

Long combination vehicles and tandems

The Authority "may temporarily suspend LCV/tandem operations at any time for any reason, including inclement weather", and while such a restriction is in place LCVs and tandems may not use the Thruway mainline or its ramps — only the assembly areas and the travel-plaza truck lots.

Empty tractor-trailers in lake-effect storms

Bans on empty tractor-trailers and tandems are imposed on parts of the road for a single storm — on 29 December 2025 from Exit 46 to the Pennsylvania line, where lake-effect snow and high winds were forecast.
